Some people have come to ask me why I claim that Voodoo, witchcraft, black magic, and all similar practices besides Macumba do not really work, when some people have been absolutely sure that they have
experienced real effects from such practices before.
It is true that all other practices besides Macumba which involve some kind of "magic" do not work, or they only work in the imaginations of those who practice them or believe in them. If you have
experienced any real effects from these practices, it has always been Macumba, even if you didn't realize it. This happens because, sadly, sometimes Macumba items or knowledge falls into the wrong
hands and is then incorporated into other practices, such as Voodoo.
For example, if a well known practitioner of Macumba dies in Brazil and the news spreads, his/her house will immediately become a treasure trove to Macumba oracles who will be searching the house
and stealing everything they can get their hands on. When this happens, they might find a "recipe book" for Macumba items, which is worth a fortune to them. If such a book finds its way into the
hands of someone who practices a different belief, the Macumba knowledge that is written within may then be incorporated into this practice. But even if such a book falls into the wrong hands, that
person will only be able to create the most basic entry level Macumba items, which are mostly not even described in such books. The description of any advanced Macumba items will be useless to them,
because it requires a lot of experience in Macumba to be able to create them.
Now you may be wondering why the police does not just stop these Macumba oracles from breaking into the house. In Brazil, due to the high crime rate, the police generally does not watch over districts,
as it is being done in wealthier countries. They are busy dealing with criminals and will only be present where they have been called to because a crime has already been committed. If a large crime is
being committed, such as a bank robbery, the police generally shoots first and asks questions later. Even if the police were able to watch over districts, they would not protect houses where Macumba is
known to be practiced, because even people working for the police are scared of Macumba.
When someone who is known to practice Macumba dies, it is common knowledge that Macumba oracles will be coming to loot the house, and nobody will interfere with them. Since the police does not watch
over districts, except in particularly rich areas, people who want to have someone watch over their house will hire a kind of night watchman, which is known as guarda noturno. These are private
guards who work for money. They walk along the streets at night and watch out for any signs of trouble. Since the crime rate in Brazil is so high, many people who can afford it hire the
guarda noturno. However, as soon as the money stops coming to them, they will not watch over the house anymore. Thus, if a Macumba practitioner dies, they also will not protect his/her house
because they won't be paid if the owner is dead.
Under normal circumstances, Macumba practitioners do not have to be so afraid of criminals breaking into their homes, because they know it would be very dangerous to steal from a Macumba practitioner.
However, when someone dies or is known to be on vacation, that house becomes a prime target if it is not watched over by a guard.
Another large contributor to this are charwomen, which are often hired in Brazil to clean the homes of Macumba practitioners. In such situations, they often get to steal Macumba items, which are
then sold to Macumba oracles, or they might be able to learn small things about Macumba because they often are very close to where Macumba is being practiced by the owner of the house. If they think
they might have picked up some Macumba knowledge, this is then also offered to Macumba oracles.
Macumba knowledge might also be spread to different practices when, for example, a family member knows a few things about Macumba and teaches someone who practices Voodoo about the creation of basic
entry level Macumba items.
The most common way to bring Macumba into different practices is when someone buys items from a Macumba oracle, and then uses them in his/her own practice. This is how many Voodoo shops have acquired
items that actually do work, even if they are only rarely described properly. What makes Macumba items unique is that they always work, even if a person doesn't know how to use it properly at all, or
doesn't know its real effect. For example, a Macumba candle only needs to be lit to release the effect that it has been created for, whether this is the intended effect by the person who lights the
candle or not. It doesn't matter if someone first pours oil over the candle, engraves his/her name on it and then dances nakedly in front of it on a night of full moon while visualizing his/her wish.
As long as the candle gets lit, it will release its effect. It is the same with all other types of Macumba items. A spell just needs to be read, incense only needs to be burned, jewelry just needs to
be worn, and so on. This means that other practices, such as Voodoo, can include their various rituals and performances when reselling or giving away Macumba items they have purchased from an oracle,
because it won't make a difference to the end result if it's a real Macumba item.
However, it is always dangerous to buy Macumba items from oracles in Brazil, for various reasons. For one, you will never know whether the item you have bought from an oracle is a real Macumba item
at all, or just something that has found its way into the hands of the oracle because it looks similar to one. And even if it is a real Macumba item, you will never know exactly what effect it will have
when it will be used, even if the oracle supposedly tells you about it. Macumba oracles cannot find out what effect a Macumba item will actually have, or even if it is a real Macumba item. To learn more
about what Macumba oracles are, read the answer to this question.
In the end, such mislabeled Macumba items that you might have acquired from different sources will always be much weaker than Macumba effects coming from an experienced Macumba practitioner, because
such people are only able to create entry level Macumba items, at most.
